We’re so excited to announce the return of Horrockses Fashions X Joanie! In this week's blog, we’ll be giving you some tips on how to style the collection, as well as a bit of background about Horrockses Fashions and how the range came to be.

When creating this range, we wanted to make modern heirlooms - dresses that can be treasured and passed down like the originals. We wanted to replicate the ‘thrill of the find’ and the feeling of buying a unique vintage piece!

The Horrockses X Joanie dresses are so fun to style, and the versatility of them is quite surprising! It was important to us to ensure these dresses match the Horrockses values of being high-quality ready-to-wear pieces.

What Was Horrockses Fashions?

Horrockses Fashions was a ready-to-wear clothing label established by the Preston-based cotton manufacturer Horrockses, Crewdson & Co in the early 1940s. They released their first collection in 1946 when 'off-the-peg' clothing was still a relatively new concept, and their collections of cotton garments were known for their high quality.

In 1952, Queen Elizabeth II (then Princess Elizabeth) selected several dresses from Horrockses latest collection for her Royal Tour of the Commonwealth. Many members of the royal family were fans of Horrockses designs in the 1950s, including several Duchesses and Countesses and even Princess Margaret.

This contributed hugely to their appeal: for the first time, Horrockses Fashions made it possible for many middle and working-class people to own the same dress as the Queen.

Horrockses Fashions ceased trading as a label in 1983, but that’s not to say that interest in the brand ceased, too. On the vintage market, Horrockses dresses are highly sought after because of their unique designs and superior quality.

The tagline ‘this year, next year - and always’ printed on a lightweight cotton invitation to their first fashion show in 1946 rings true today: Horrockses pieces are true heirlooms, which is why they remain popular with collectors and vintage enthusiasts alike.

Styling Horrockses Fashions X Joanie

The Horrockses X Joanie dresses are so fun to style, and the versatility of them is quite surprising! It was important to us to ensure these dresses match the Horrockses values of being high-quality ready-to-wear pieces.

They can be styled easily for any upcoming summer events (think picnics and sunny days out!), and lots of them are great staple pieces for your wardrobe all year round.

The Montana Dress is a great all-year-round dress. In spring, it looks great with a light cropped jacket and ballet shoes. In summer, all you need to do is pair this gingham beauty with sandals, and you’re good to go. For those colder autumn and winter months, a cosy jumper, tights, and boots really change this dress up.

Nell Strawberry is such a fun fruity print to style. Our teal Linda Cardigan, brogues and a satchel take this dress back to the 40s. Or if you prefer vintage-inspired to a more full-on vintage look, white sandals and a basket bag makes for a more simple, cute look.

Margaret is a great everyday dress for vintage lovers and beyond. For more of an alternative look, Margaret looks so good with a leather jacket, black waist belt, and biker boots.
